Prof. Declan Devane trained as a nurse and a midwife, meandering his way into trial methodology and evidence synthesis and his work now focusses on a blend across midwifery (and broader maternity care), randomised trials and how they are done and synthesising evidence. He holds the Chair in Midwifery and is Deputy Dean of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at NUI Galway. He is also Scientific Director of the HRB-Trials Methodology Research Network, Director of Evidence Synthesis Ireland and Director of Cochrane Ireland. Declan led his first core outcome set in 2006 and is or has been involved in over a dozen core outcome sets including, for example, pre-pregnancy care for women with pre-gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction, induction of labour, postpartum haemorrhage and cardiac surgery trials. He has also contributed to the methods for the development and reporting of core outcome sets.
